A man ran up and knelt before Jesus, and asked him, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” (Mark 10:17)
To inherit is to be given something of value, often from a family member, that is received after the benefactor is gone. What is received has not been earned, and is a totally free gift. A person can have the hope of receiving an inheritance, but the power and authority for granting the gift lays solely within the domain of the giver. Our Lord God is not only the one who gives us life, but is our sole hope of eternal life. It is not the matter of what we can do to inherit eternal life; instead, it is how we live faithfully in this life according to the promise embodied in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
